Brian, It's not just clicking on a link and filling out the form. That's just part of it, then waiting for the activation email which means you need to switch to another app (your email client), look for that activation email, click on the link. That brings you back to your web browser where currently you are still required to enter your username and password (doesn't autofill the username). Then go back to Chandler do the rest of the sharing exercise. This has never been a big deal for me because it really is a one time exercise. I didn't realize till yesterday when I was talking to a user who said "wow, that's a lot".

So possibly we are only talking about a certain small segment of users who feel this way about signing up externally for an account and we can live with that.

In general, I agree with Morgen's comment that the more dire workflows need more attention in the short term.
