Sounds crazy, but, has anyone every considered using a dedicated search engine instead of MySQL's fulltext search? I'm thinking about Lucene. I have used it for one of my projects for years and have been really happy about it. Recently I switched over from Java Lucene to PHP Lucene which is supported and included in the Zend Framework and have become much happier. If there's interest, I can work on a prototype.
