Applets work with a plugin type framework. On Solaris, we ship the default applets that come in the gnome-applets package plus a few others like Quick Lounge, gnome-netstatus, and deskbar-applet. I'd bet that other Linux distros are just building additional applets. If you were to highlight which applets you find useful, but which are missing on Solaris, then we could consider adding them.
