That doesn't work for me exactly how I want, but it led me to another
solution: start VirtualBox liek this:
VirtualBox -bg white
Ta dah! Works like a charm. :-) Now to figure out what incantation
to put into my .Xdefaults so that this happens automagically (clues
welcome!)...
