I think having a downloads folder is a good idea,
and I have always created it in my home directory
as the one place where I configure all of my apps
to drop things when I download stuff. Formalizing
this practice would be nice.

Eventually, most applications might be configured
to check a global downloads preference or for the
existence of ~/Downloads or ~/downloads and offer
this as the default location to the user the
first time the app is used to download something.

It's better then dumping things in "." or the
desktop or asking me every time where something
should go.

Doesn't it make sense that there be a global
download directory preference that apps can
reference, and then not bother the user? And
the logical follow-on question is, shouldn't
that preference be preset to ~/Downloads ?

Apple seems to have made this choice in 10.5.

I'm only offering it as a suggestion because
it has made sense for me for a great number of
years. I don't know what other folks do with
their downloads, but making the directory and
then educating every app seems tedious and yet
trivial at the same time. It's nice to have
but certainly not back-breaking labor.

I'll keep doing the same thing I've always
done even if the GUI doesn't try to help me.

Thanks,

Dale
