What version of JDS are you trying to run? What kinds of machine is the remote machine and the local machine?
I don;t think the delay is caused by Java or some sort, since the program that connect between remotely are C program and if the connection between local and remote machines are local ethernet connection, the dealy shouldn;t be that bad.
