Stephen,

If you're running remotely over a slow link, make sure accessibility 
(Assistive technology support) is disabled and at-spi-registryd isn't 
running.  Since Ian isn't having significant problems using VNC and I'm 
not having problems running the latest Solaris GNOME development via Sun 
Ray over broadband, I suspect that you're correct that chatty X traffic 
may be the problem.  Turning off accessibility and at-spi-registryd 
should reduce the number of round trips between the X server and client.
