The slowness is across the board.  I would guess that the VPN is part of
the problem and distance is another. When I have seen this kind of
behavior in applications, it usually mean that the client and server a
rather chatty. Distance of the link then becomes a major factor in the
responsiveness. I have tried logging on to the server direct from my
laptop that runs Solaris over the vpn using remote login and it doesn't
appear to make much difference.  

I have used an eval copy of the lastest version of ExceedonDemand and it
improves the performance considerably.  I think maybe I should give VNC
a try and see if that helps.

  Not sure whether the slowness is a side effect of vpn or not.
Most people I know of using vpn does not going through chooser
simply login and then vpn. So you have another level of indirection.
