No, not quite. You do need to compile the codecs, but VLC's plugins will link to whatever codec libraries you have installed. You need to do that whether on Solaris 10 or OpenSolaris. If you install your codecs (e.g. ffmpeg, libmad) in /usr/local (most common) or /usr, the app should automatically find them; anywhere else and you will need to use the "crle" tool to adjust your system library search path.
The package is a bzipped SVR4 package, so bunzip2 it and then pkgadd -d $filename. There may be spec files for the codecs, I'm not sure. I don't know how to write spec files so there isn't one for my package, and unfortunately being a full-time student rapidly approaching the end of summer break (still with a long to do list) means I don't have time to learn spec files :( Hope this helps!
