I would not say this is security by obscurity, but more like "security by 
avoiding unnecessary divulgence of information." 

several years back I chatted with a sys admin running university computer 
center, that was about ATM fraudulence and how they can do that with only the 
magnetic stripe at back of the debit card. I said what's the good if a 
malicious user has only access to the bank account serial number of his target, 
meaning that I wound not worry too much, then he shot back with "would you like 
let me know one of your least important account number?" After the second 
thought, I said no.

So would you?
