I'm an NT developer myself. I know it and like it...but I just went through a series of wierdness where I kept having it crash on me for no reason at all with obscure error codes that MS didn't document. I've gone through things like that in the past and have decided that perhaps having the source code for the web server, os, etc...might give me a little more control over my life and some sanity...besides that, the way Apache is architected is more robust (IMHO) than IIS. I'll continue to develop for Windows because thats my background...but i have to make sure I can keep my site(s) working and some of the problems I have had with NT frustrate the **** out of me. Also, future features that we want to add are relatively difficult to automate in NT...for example, URL forwarding...I spent nearly a week trying to find the WMI (windows management interface) for the MS DNS server...now, to integrate that in with the web server to automate the whole thing through a console...sheesh. Trust me on this...unix is easier for things like that...
having said all of that, now that I installed SP2 for W2K my site runs great and hasn't crashed in a week. -bryanw HalfPriceNames Domain Registry http://www.halfpricenames.com/ -----Original Message----- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]]On Behalf Of Lynn W. I have no doubt that you will hear from several people who will claim that everything works absolutely perfectly in Linux, and I believe that what they are saying is correct for how they use it. ... and if it works for them, great. There are quite a few people running Linux very successfully (including the Linux box here). I know and understand NT. I don't have any problems with it that I haven't been able to figure out. It works for me. In the days of sailing ships, the saying was "Different ships, different long-splices" -- a modern version of that might be "never argue with anything that works." -- Lynn -----Original Message----- From: Philippe Landau Sent: Thursday, November 15, 2001 12:25 PM To: dev-list Subject: RE: OpenSRS-SF >I saw that coming... ;) Actually, I am in the process of porting everything >to PHP on linux but all things take time and I was interested in upgrading >before I finished my port. Mostly backend database work... is linux a good choice as server OS ? i am quite disappointed in seeing how poorly it handles situations where it runs out of RAM. kind regards philippe, http://InternetRoot.com
