So - we have the OpenSRS protocol, which appears to be partly documented in Perl, and apparently difficult to implement elsewhere, yet is pretty quick.

Then we have SOAP, which has client libraries everywhere already, is simple to use at least using those libraries, but is probably quite a bit slower, perhaps depending on how you use it.

Personally I'm more than happy with the OpenSRS protocol for now, but then I'm also happy with Perl. But, I'd happily trade some CPU cycles for the ability to easily use standard libraries on any old platform.
