I definitely think that some aspects of Firefox development has gotten
easier thanks to the split.

Sounds like the build system has not. I agree that we need to change
something to improve that situation.

I can't say that I have detailed proposal to make here.

But I think that the clear directive from project leadership has been
to prioritize Firefox development over other Gecko based projects.

My recommendation would be to make whatever build system changes are
needed in order to make the firefox build system as awesome as
possible. Then add minimal hooks which enables c-c to build. Ideally
such hooks are contributed by the thunderbird team.

I'd also expect those hooks to need changing every now and then as the
firefox build system evolves. Again, I think the responsibility to of
the thunderbird developers to keep such hooks working.
