Hi Don, Welcome! For learning Accumulo I highly recommend taking the tour:
https://accumulo.apache.org/tour/

We also have a contributing guide that is pretty good
https://accumulo.apache.org/how-to-contribute/

Also, I am not sure if anyone talked to you about this yet or not but the
"master" branch on Github is the 2.0 release line. We are trying to get
2.0 released ASAP but feel free to make pull requests against master. We
just had a release for the 1.9 branch and that is just for supporting bug
fixes.

Also, also, we seemed to have settled on Slack for chat so don't hesitate
to ask questions! https://accumulo.apache.org/contact-us/#slack
