Maybe some sort of small OOo launcher that records the OOo component and time/date before running the program. You could send out an email to the relevant lists and advertise it on the OOo web site saying that how useful it would be to the community to know how often and what part of OOo is used, and give them the option of installing it and using it.
It may sound far-fetched, but I would use it and would encourage all of my clients to, as it would be another contribution back to the project.
Most of the people I know, personally and professionally, consider the OpenOffice.org project a "friendly" one, and would have no qualms with this as long as it was introduced correctly.
