Good, we agree on one thing.

Please state exactly in which way you plan to give credit.

I don't have exact ideas at this stage.

Okay.

But that's a poor analogy.

Well certainly, but the point I'm making is not over the merits of the JCA, but over how you try to convince someone to sign it. Telling them "you get to keep the copyright over your own work" is just silly.

Question: Is there someone at "Sun legal" I could talk to and ask questions.

In short, from your perspective, the problem is Sun.

That's a bit of an over-simplification. There are things Sun could do to make it more appealing.

For example, when I worked with Mono I contributed 12,000 lines of code under a CA (notice, no J). So obviously, I'm not completely against the idea. But there were other factors that convinced me to do it. Miguel was a nice guy, he explained why it was important to him. I trusted Miguel (still do). And I had a promise that my contribution would remain open source, under the MIT license. They also made it easy for me. They didn't require me to print a piece of paper and mail it long distance. They were satisfied with a prominent copyright notice at the top of the file. They also allowe me to do it on a per-file basis. So agreeing to send some work under a CA at one point did not force everything else I did with thlem to be also CA.

I hope you'll get the general picture and not dwell on details here. There are factors that can make the JCA more appealing like, for example, (1) how you sell it to people (2) an agreement of how the work will be used, (3) the per-file agreements, (4) trust, (5) convenience etc. I'm sure you can think of other factors.

Cheers,
Daniel.
