The fact that ODF is a relatively easily parsable XML based format
makes it ideal to access legacy MS Office files.
In that context, there are plenty of businesses that make use of OOo,
if only as a format filter, to handle MSO files.
One business area I can think of (because I am active there) is
natural language translations with XML parser based computer aided
translation tools. A typical example of such tools is OmegaT.
The workflow is as follows:
1) receive the file from your client
2) convert it to ODF
3) translate it with OmegaT
4) convert the translated file back to MSO
5) deliver
There are issues with the current filters (especially for moderately
to highly complex files) so it is difficult to not check the document
in the application used by the client for verification purposes (ie
MSO), but without OOo, the whole process would depend on closed source
expensive solutions.
Of course, OmegaT is not the only software that supports ODF.
What matters here is that the end document will most probably be used
as a non editable medium (in print or as PDF). Hence, the intermediate
processes that use MSO are redundant and only add to the work load
without adding much value to the whole process.
Documents destined for translation should rather be fully removed from
a MSO toolchain and moved to an OOo/ODF one to reduce costs and
production time.
