I see no reason not to have Eclipse projects under source control. Why would this be bad practice?

And the actual file extension would be added to gitignore. For example, .project would be added to gitignore. But, .project.template can be checked in. Whoever wants to use it, can copy the file into .project locally and tweak it as needed.
