Here's a reason for this. Content encoding and the ability to send compressed data is part of the HTTP standard and if Apache 2.x is really HTTP compliant then it should support it. Why build and offer a new version of Apache which is not 100% HTTP compliant? And if so should we use the mod_gzip compression functions instead of depending on zlib ?
