Like I wrote when GNOME, or KDE, or any of the other linux desktop
players want stuff like this to be standardised they just write a
freedesktop spec (a f.d.o. spec can be real short) ask on the f.d.o
lists if every desktop player is ok with it, and get it published.

That's not an heavy process and is great to avoid worrying about
DE/distro differences
