I don't know how well that would work.  For one, there's only one FieldCache, 
so configuring it with anything seems problematic.
Also, if I have to list out all the fields I'm going to use, that's another big 
step backwards.

A factory would be a pretty straightforward way to increase the power, by 
allowing users to populate the entry through any mechanism, and optionally do 
extra calculations when the entry is populated (think statistics, 
sum-of-squares, etc).
