The nastiness in the bait-and-switch apparent in Ubuntu 10.04 has been very visible for about two releases. The distro is a write-off at this point. OOo on netbooks is possible, though not as fast. A few years ago (or more) there was discussion of the need to trim down and streamline the OOo code. Unfortunately, the OOo programmers already do a lot of work. The rewrite would be one the scale of the Mozilla rewrite, probably larger.
