In general.

And I know that the ordering of the elements matters.  It is very very 
dodgy.
   

I would say it has be the old way or the new way not a mixture. Either
groupId/artifactId or id.
 

Definitely, but there's a lot of legacy out there.

Also, I was reading through the project references last night (a fun day 
indeed!) and I discovered that id + groupId is the way that is 
documented in the POM reference.
