Yes, this is exactly what was originally discussed in the initial thread on
time-based releases that we seem to have lost. Two other things worth
discussion IMO

- in the original thread I think it was Jan suggested having merge windows,
and only merging things outside of that that are bug fixes intended for the
next release - keep cherry picking minimal.

- in line with that, maybe the release branch could happen later in the
process? Or at least kept in sync with master for longer?

release branch would be better?
