Here is my take on this. JCA is more for legacy systems integration. For Tomee since it's dependent on Tomcat, it makes sense that it works with Tomcat DB pool. Which means it's a matter of making Tomcat pool support JTA for Tomee. If that's not possible, override Tomcat pool in Tomee. Even with plain Tomcat it was possible to use JTA data sources by settings a transaction manager. So Tomee can do the same when registering data sources.
