I'm not terribly fond of larding cleanups in with other changes, either. I think I'd prefer the massive single cleanup, though I certainly see the merge problems it presents.
Would it be less objectionable to perform far-reaching janitorial work after the merge window has closed?
And, for my education, how many folks are keeping long-running branches outside the trunk?
