I have done a quick read through the code, but nothing too deep. I think a
lot of the work seems fine, but I really would like to see a much better split
between the leader election and the persistent storage. Most of the code is
already there, but it still feels tightly coupled.
I'll try to find some more time tomorrow to dig deeper into the changes.
