Java complains about most of them. I need to dig into the ones it
doesn't. Something isn't quite right there yet.

I get the impression that trunk is heading towards your implementation.
'd be happy to look at suggested patches to improve trunk that moved it
towards your implementation. As I said before, small incremental changes
are easier to manage than one big patch.
