We need a proper discussion and agreement on the mailing list

I'd be in favor of having 1.7.x EOL
7.x should also somehow turn EOL soon
8.x will be maintenance only so we can turn master to 9.x
We have EE10 around the corner so we need to move on or we'll have 5
versions to maintain in parallel which isn't really easy
