I'm just really wondering about any HUGE overhauls in light of eventual
Kenai migration, which I still haven't learned much about.

You can learn more about kenai migration at
http://kenai.com/projects/ooo-migration/pages/Home

Note that work on creating a theme for kenai with the CURRENT OOo Look &
Feel has already been started and work on the basic elements there is nearly
complete so just now might not be the very best time to consider a major
redesign in the light of upcoming kenai migration.
So it seems that the migration will be happening sooner rather than
later? There has been no activity (as far as I could see) on the
mailing lists for the ooo-migration and test2ooo projects and it
doesn't seem like progress has been made on (for example) Kenai issue
1834 regarding the modifiability of site templates on a
project-by-project basis (http://kenai.com/jira/browse/KENAI-1834). I
haven't seen any wiki pages newer than February 2010.

Progress on most kenai related work has indeed been stalled for a while but we have just recently restarted some work on the OOo kenai migration. There´s a small Oracle internal team which is currently looking into technical details of how to get data from one system into the other.

Having resources available for adding new kenai features like that KENAI-1834 issue will though still need some time as people which would be able to implement such things are currently busy with other tasks.

There is also no staging site yet. We will inform you as soon as it will become available.

kenai is based on ruby for rails as CMS and thus the kenai theme for OOo is
basically just a bunch of ruby for rails files which integrate with the
kenai infrastructure. You can find the source code for the OOo kenai theme
here: https://svn.kenai.com/svn/ooo-migration~themes.
I got a 404 Not Found error when trying this URL, and the same for
every file mentioned on the Migration page of the wiki
(http://kenai.com/projects/ooo-migration/pages/Migration).

You have to use that source URL with a "svn checkout" command not with a browser to get the source code.

The links on that "Migration" page are links into an old netbeans migration project which indeed was a 'private' project on kenai, thus the 404 error there.

There will be a couple of Sun/Oracle developed programs for internal migration of the OOo data we will get or partly already got from Collabnet into the kenai infrastructure, these will be based on similar stuff which already has been used during the netbeans migration from Collabnet to kenai. These programs and the original netbeans migration tools they will be based on are indeed not open source.

The CSS stylesheets used there are well some kind of a mix of the current
OOo stylesheets and some new kenai specific stuff.

A staging site for OOo on kenai is going to be set up soon but I can not
give any information on how soon that will be at the momment.
Please keep us informed. I am somewhat concerned about (what appears
to be) the closed nature of this process.

We try to be open as much as we can about what we are doing and open to communication and participation where possible. The software which will be used to actually migrate Collabnet internal datastructures into kenai internal datastructures will not be open sourced though. But some configuration files used by those migration programs will be made available public and there content can also be discussed in public. You can find those here: https://svn.kenai.com/svn/ooo-migration~migration  (again use this with "svn checkout" not with your browser!).
We currently do not think it is necessary and possible to public reveal and discuss technical details of the migration tools being currently worked on or details about kenai´s internal data structures and internal database layout etc.

Unfortunately besides some technical problems we are currently trying to solve with those closed source migration tools to be used in the migration process there´s not much news at the momment. Well acutally there may be just one small information which might be interesting and that is that I have recently adapted the OOo kenai theme to the recent changes on the current OOo website and as thus adapted it to be using the new OOo logo, the new current branding color scheme and stylesheet changes.  Once we will have a OOo kenai staging site you will be able to actually see this.

Regards,
Ivan.
