I don't know the background of this student, but it would be interesting and definitely more stimulating if she/he could work to a small parser/translator (using ANTLR or something similar) to scan gdoc sources and produce the new format.

The task is quite tedious. I'd rather dig a hole instead. And I'd prefer a
different company than yours after such task!
It is my assumption that he probably wants to automate steps while
converting. Which I would encourage of course. The resulting set of
scripts could then possibly be used by the asciidoctor project as an
automated migration for projects using gdoc.
