Now that I know what it refers to, Peter has a point - since '+' has
been used in so many IRC apps over the years to represent 'voice', it
does seem rather commonplace and accepted - seemingly to the point
where any IRC user will understand it.

Furthermore, I'm inclined to believe that few people are going to use
IRC support in Adium that haven't used it in the past primarily
because even the addition of an IRC account is so different from that
of other IM protocols. Because of this, it seems like a commonly
accepted icon such as '+' might be best for consistency and
recognition.

I don't believe I've been in an IRC chat which used voice in years; that's a statement not of its prevalence but rather of how infrequently I use IRC. If that's a known icon for voice, we should use it in some form.
