Using gdal directly is not that pleasant. I would opt for a GIS package - with a GUI. I've never used the open source GIS apps but something like GRASS should be able to assist you in doing the conversion.
I might be able to help. I've gone all windows 7 at home so am missing my Manifold GIS app but could get it installed in the next few days and take a look for you.
