I recently came across (yet another) hyper-local website which might be of interest to some people on this list:
http://www.streetclub.co.uk/ Nice and easy to sign up / create your own local group, seems pretty stable and has lots of features that should be useful, but right now it seems to suffer from "empty room" syndrome.
