Two related items:

1. We've had two hackathons on a related concept:
http://e-democracy.org/Neighborly

The volunteer developers are Python/Django-oriented. Join us. It is
early. The key innovation is a design based on each individuals
neighborliness (or exposure) preference and connecting people
dynamically versus leaving them in virtual ghost towns.

The "problem" with most hyperlocal sites and our own Issues Forum
model is that we can't serve areas without leaders making broad
recruitment difficult. On the other hand, nothing replaces the
block/community leader willing to go door to door or sign people up at
community events:

2. Lessons and experiences are not being shared widely. So join the
Locals Online revolution:
http://e-democracy.org/locals

Did you know 8 million Americans are on neighborhood e-mail lists? Who
knew! None of the hosts are connected. Well we connect 25 of the
40,000 or so. :-)
