If you start mmbase, you might see this on stdout:

Configuring logging with /home/mmbase/mmbase-app/WEB-INF/config/log/log.xml
(If logging does not start then dtd validation might be a problem on your server)
Class to use for logging org.mmbase.util.logging.log4j.Log4jImpl
(Depending on your selected logging system no more logging
might be written to this file. See the configuration of the
selected logging system for more hints where logging will appear)
Parsing /home/mmbase/mmbase-app/WEB-INF/config/log/log4j.xml

Would:
Configuring logging with /home/mmbase/mmbase-app/WEB-INF/config/log/log.xml
Class to use for logging org.mmbase.util.logging.log4j.Log4jImpl
Parsing /home/mmbase/mmbase-app/WEB-INF/config/log/log4j.xml

not suffice?

Honestly, I think those parenthesised remarks are
superflous. Especially because there are only semi-true. The first one
can hardly be a problem any-more (since de dtd's should be in
mmbase.jar, you can hardly fail to have them), and the second, well...
