With my maintainer hat on: part of the duty of a maintainer is to solve issues in the right place. Sometimes is downstreams, in distributions, and sometimes is directly in the distro. For this case, as you have seen in other replies, update-alternatives is just not the right place. And we distribution maintainers have been trying to solve it at the right place: here, in upstream's code.
