As you can see the ..... Oh Crap!!! I just found out what happened...
There was a typo made when I created the custom template directory...
I created ../smtp_check_rules instead of ../smtpd_check_rules
All is working now...
I knew it had to be something stupid like that, because all was
working fine on the other server.

Actually it was Gordon's suggestion that I enable the debug option
that made solving this easy. I was able to see on screen what
templates where being expanded and because my custom template for
smtpd_check_rules was not being expanded and the one for
./var/control/smtproutes was, it through up a red flag. I then went
to my custom-templates directory and double checked all paths and
file names. It took 5 minutes from the time I enabled the debug
option to solve this problem....
Once again I've proven that e-smith does exactly what it's supposed
to do, and that the real issue was a PEBKAC error. :-( (I've got to
start getting more sleep....maybe tomorrow)
