I just got around to trying out phpmyadmin, but I get a connection failure
from MySQL, i.e.:

        MySQL Connection Failed: Access denied for user: 'root@localhost' (Using
password: YES)

I followed your instructions to the letter except I did not install the
.src.rpm, just the .noarch.rpm. Is that OK?

As instructed, I logged in as "admin", and when this failed (and not being
quite sure of what I'm doing :-) I also added "admin" as a user in the MySQL
user table, but that didn't seem to help.
