Something doesn't sound right.  Do this.  Simply login as root.  From the 
root directory enter the command mysql.  Do you get this:

[root@e-smith /root]# mysql
Welcome to the MySQL monitor.  Commands end with ; or \g.
Your MySQL connection id is 250 to server version: 3.23.32

Type 'help;' or '\h' for help. Type '\c' to clear the buffer

mysql>

Type exit to return to the command prompt.
