As a non-developer Freenet user, I can only express my wholehearted support for this approach. Current versioning strategy is *extremely* confusing to non-technical open source users accustomed to <major>.<minor>.<patch> versioning (i.e., build 1468 contains major, non-backwards compatible changes, and yet it is only separated by a single build number from a previous version). Also, projects with major version not being incremented for what? 8 years now, correct? - are often perceived as abandoned, which isn't what Freenet is probably looking for.
