Is this really that necessary?  I have been inserting away happily 
for a while now with rc1.  

If there is a *really* good reason then we should do this ASAP and test
it HARD with inserts.

What is the liklihood of a regression with this bugfix?  Can you get 
Oskar to do some detailed code review of your modifications to minimize 
the possibility of a regression.

I would keep pre-0.5 changes to an absolute minimum, unless we 
absolutely need it - don't change it.
