There is Java 1.6 for 64bit Macs (ie. all macs sold in the last 2
years or so AFAIK), and while there is no official Java for 32bit
Macs, there is SoyLatte, so those with older hardware shouldn't be
completely stuck.

However, I think there is another question which is: what do we gain
by switching to 1.6?  IIRC there were no huge changes between 1.5 and
1.6, just relatively minor stuff like the addition of skiplists to the
collections classes.

We should remain 1.5 compatible unless there is a compelling reason not to.
