Thats a good point for discussion... when / how do you best integrate off the shelf vs. build your own...
These days I am much more for integrating 3rd party stuff as much as possible and build custom where needed.... UNLESS there is some big feature that the off the shelf stuff doesn't give you that you need....
I don't want to discuss too much here, cause I want to let others chime in and give their two cents....
Also, I think if you look at what needs to be on the home page - upcoming events, news about new things on the site, etc... these are all dated items that a blog would serve perfectly....
Maybe we need to discuss what specifically we want on our homepage...

I'm all for this, but as I pondered it for a while here are my
concerns. General comment: I think BlogFusion's great--I use it for
my blog--so nothing I'm saying here is in any way intended to slight
BlogFusion. Keep up the great work Jake!
That being said, while things like the home page are "blog-like" it's
not really a blog, so I don't want to shoehorn things if it's not a
good fit. Particularly with the home page I think if we just call it
a blog and use BlogFusion, that stands things on their head a bit.
Also, one of the other things I wanted to see happen with this project
is that the end result would be freely available to other CFUGs (or
any other organization who wanted to use it for that matter). So I'm
afraid if we go the BlogFusion + our own custom development route
we're going to wind up with something that's a bit hard to manage and
distribute. Any pre-existing package is going to have its own way of
doing things, its own database, etc. so management and maintenance
would be an issue in my mind as well.
That's not to say we shouldn't consider using BlogFusion for a blog
section of the site; I think this could be a very cool addition to the
overall landscape of what's available to our members. My concern
stems from thinking of the CFUG application as an application in and
of itself and the integration and management issues that may arise
from combining this application with something that exists
independently.
