Hello all,
I am experiencing a lease renewal problem on my Linux setup. First, the
setup: Pentium Linux system, kernel 2.0.36, using dhclient pl 27, Bellsouth
ADSL w/Alcatel modem. When it works, it works well. I operate my setup in a
production environment where I want the connection to be available 24/7.
However, I understand that there have been complaints made to BellSouth about
the quality of their DHCP services, but Windows users seem to not experience
the same problems I am seeing AFAIK.
What happens is that when the lease expires (I usually get about 43000
seconds for a lease period), the renewal process fails isasmuch as I don't
receive a DHCPOFFER. If I shut down the system and restart, I get a new
lease and everything is fine until the next renewal. Interestingly, dhclient
does not successfully utilize the previous lease information (assuming it's
appropriate to do so).
Question 1) Is this a common issue with BellSouth? I can't be the only
customer of theirs with this problem is the issue is really their DHCP
servers.
Question 2) Is there a workaround? Specifying the preferred lease time
perhaps? I am pretty unfamiliar with the mechanics of DHCP but I've been
learning of late :-)
Thanks ahead of time for anyone's responses.
