If that's true for the bare open() without going through possible translations in "ls", I'd guess that "//server/share" would look for a file/directory "share" in "/server", so std.path should treat it this way for posix, too.
Sorry, if my previous comments in the phobos-list caused confusion, I must have confused the mount share with a directory specification.
