I guess the manual of your burner software will be able to tell you. Look at burning a data disk.
The idea is to keep the disk open for adding stuff later. Most burning software defaults to closing the CD after write, and you cannot add stuff afterwards. But there are enough acceptions. Nero e.g. gives you the choice...
