Actually (and I apologize for Ross here)... The registry DOES provide for upgrades. Currently the OpenSRS system does not. We're looking into possible solutions (including transfers/renewals of email forward as a seperate object than domains), but it's a significant architecture change to get this to work properly (and have no impact to our channel).
In the interim, if you want email you MUST get it when you purchase the domain.
