One other problem with embedding the font in the file (which I didn't see anyone bring up, and if they did, I apologize) is it would increase the file size for the document. That isn't much of a concern with a single document, but if you have a couple thousand documents, each with the same font(s) embedded, that would take up a lot of unneccessary space.
I do like the idea of an online font repository where the font can be downloaded as needed, although logistically, I'm a little unsure how that wold work. I'd also be concerned about whether that would force the user to only use the fonts in the repository.
