We have been lucky in Australia that we got an exemption from our tax office
for what is an educational activity so no tax charges or implications there and
amounts have been pretty small (less than $2,000). Eventbrite's cut is a bit
high but the convenience is fantastic - doing the emails and attendee lists and
waitlists and managing refunds is a logistical headache which Eventbrite make
really easy. If there was a cheaper way, I would do it ! But university finance
systems are invariably cumbersome and complex and I am glad I could circumvent
them. Good luck. As I said, Eventbrite do pay AFTER the event and we have been
lucky that our venue asks for fees after the event as well, so we haven't been
out of pocket, but I know not everyone would be in that situation as most
places would want to charge a deposit, if not the whole fee, upfront.

Belinda
